Capoeira is a cultural expression that has its roots in the resistance of enslaved Africans brought to Brazil during the colonial period. Originally from the northeast region of the country, Capoeira is a mix of fighting, dancing and games, which mixes elements of African culture.
I am Nelson Andrade Rodrigues Barros, African. I started Capoeira around 1989 with master Pedro Paulo de Abreu, in Carcavelos, Ludance. In Capoeira, I was called Nelsinho, but later, around 1993, I was baptized in Capoeira with the nickname Corisco, due to my great ability and speed in the game. From a very early age, I was a complete capoeirista, participating in various circles and presentations, being a good player, musician and singer of various Capoeira rhythms.
The Afro-Brazilian Capoeira Academy is an institution dedicated to the teaching and practice of Capoeira, a martial art of Afro-Brazilian origin that combines elements of dance, acrobatics, music and culture. The academy aims to promote Capoeira as a form of cultural expression, in addition to contributing to the appreciation and preservation of Afro-Brazilian traditions.
“Transmitting Capoeira knowledge since 1995 has been an essential part of my life. Through the Afro-Brazilian Capoeira Academy, AABC, I have shared the fundamentals of this martial art with students of all ages and backgrounds."
